THE VERY BEST DESSERT IN THE NORWICH LANES

It’s spring in the Norwich Lanes!

It’s almost warm enough to leave the house without a jacket but still cold enough to use hot chocolate as an excuse to warm up. If you ever find yourself in Norwich, I want to bring a few lovely eateries to your attention…where the interiors are small but the character is big.

Only a quick walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, a creative hub awaits. The high street is a world away from these charming cobbled lanes, filled with independent shops and eateries wedged beneath red brick apartments.

Galleries and antique showrooms are sandwiched between bakeries and craft shops, and sandwiches are replaced with pizzas the size of small islands…

First stop? Lunch at Finnie’s Juice Bar, where this chalkboard sign was too inviting for Tom to resist…

Chilli cheese dogs aren’t made for elegance…

If you ever find yourself in amongst the Norwich Lanes, Finnie’s Juice Bar is a great place for a grab-n-go lunch. Here, a pizza ‘slice’ at £2.50 is a quarter of a pizza. Fresh juices are made on site within minutes and diners gather with their hot food on rustic tables outside.

After Tom had suitably stuffed his face, we went in search of dessert and stumbled across a chalkboard sign…

Needless to say it spoke to me. So we went inside.

And then came the coffee…

The perfect Americano served with hot frothy milk in a glass bottle and stoneware that my dreams are made of.

Oh this? It’s just a lemon and pistachio cupcake. Perfectly glazed. Perfectly soft. Perfectly scoffed.

Figbar is a place where dessert is firmly on the radar…in case you hadn’t already picked up that vibe.  From opening hour, the treats you see above are laid out like jewels in a watch strap. I know – that’s a mini chocolate bundt over there. And those chocolate smothered things at the front? Jaffa cakes.

From 12 noon, the plated desserts come out to play.

So then ‘Banoffee’ happened…

Created by executive pastry chef Jaime, this dish involves banoffee caramel, lime creme fraiche, maple candied pecans, banana caramel ice cream, hazelnuts and shortbread.

Excuse me whilst I drift into a dessert-induced happy place…

On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Figbar is open until 10pm. You know what that means don’t you…

I’ll tell you. It means champagne. Champagne with the dessert. If that notion alone isn’t enough to get you to the Norwich Lanes, I don’t know what is.
