IKEA HACK: A GOLD & MARBLE COFFEE TABLE

Ikea hack, DIY gold and marble coffee table using the VITTSJO nest of tables

Seeing as you guys loved last week’s DIY Bedside Table (here) using an Ikea step stool, I thought I’d share another Ikea hack that I’m equally fond of. The VITTSJÖ  nest of tables is only £45, and it’s perfect for a an easy metallic makeover. Not only is it versatile, but you get two tables for the price of one, and I think the end result looks really expensive!

All you need for this DIY is:

Rustoleum metallic gold spray paint

Marble contact paper (I used this)

Rustoleum plastic primer

Rustoleum sealer

And don’t forget to follow me on Twitter here and Instagram here for more home and interior updates!

The good thing about this table is that the base just lifts out really easily, so it’s perfect for re-covering. You can use any contact paper for this, but I wanted the classic gold and marble combo so I used this self-adhesive vinyl film from Amazon. Just place the board on the back of the contact paper and draw around it with a pencil, that way you can cut it to exactly the right size.

Once you’ve cut it out, peel off the protective film and use a dry cloth to smooth the plastic over the board. The cloth will help smooth out any bubbles.

To spray the plastic frame, make sure you use a good-quality clear or white plastic spray primer and leave it to dry for at least 3 hours before you spray on the metallic colour. You’ll also need to fully seal the paint with a spray sealer once it’s completely dry. This will make the coffee table as hard-wearing as possible.

Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think! You can send me a message on Twitter too if you have any questions! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Georgi, love what you have done in this room. Do you mind me asking where the oblong ombre gold cushion is from? I have been looking for similar for ages! Thanks, Hazel x

Hi Hazel! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment – it means the world to me! The gold ombre cushions were from Next a couple of months ago. I had been searching for them for ages too. I'd recommend Next Home for gorgeous metallic cushions – they may even still have these ones.

Be sure to stop by again 🙂 xx

Hey Georgi – I have already put all this stuff in my basket on Amazon! Just wondering what you thought about the white tables vs. the dark for spraying and copper spray vs. gold? Thanks!

      Hi Alice!

So lovely for you to stop by. I would definitely go for the white tables (these were not available when I did my massive Ikea haul, but if they were I would have often for them instead as I had to do a couple of coats of spray to cover the black).

As for the colour, it really does depend on the look you want. I think copper works best with the marble but any metallic spray (even silver) would look great!

I hope this helps and I do hope you stop by again for more interior hacks 🙂 xxxx

    Hi!

I was wondering what specific gold finish you used? Was it the 'elegant metallic gold' or the 'brilliant metallic gold'? Thanks!

      Hi there!

I am so sorry but I can't actually remember which spray finish I used! I think it was called Antique Gold? Hope that helps. Thank you so much for reading and do let me know how your DIY project goes! xx

Hi Georgi, thanks for the great post. I wanted to follow up on how well your Ikea coffee table has held up?
I sprayed painted a similar table from Target, however, the paint simply peels off with a simple glide of my nail (can’t imagine people sliding something off of it)
I lightly sanded and even primed my coffee table (twice) prior to spraying it gold, but still same problem. 🙁
    So you have this problem?
Your input is much appreciated! Thank you
